Side Effects of Zoloft- An Overview



Sertaline Hydrochloride (Zoloft) is a prescription drug used to treat several conditions in the brain. Just like any medicine, side effects of Zoloft are possible to happen; however, not everyone who takes it will experience those undesirable effects. In fact, a lot of people tolerate the drug well.


Side effects of Zoloft are mostly minor and either need no management or can just be treated simply by you or some health professionals.

Side effects of Zoloft to Report





Some side effects of Zoloft are potentially severe and should be reported to health care providers. These comprise but are not restricted to:

  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • Hostility or aggressiveness
  • Agitation or panic attacks
  • Engaging in unusual or dangerous activities
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Extreme elation or feeling of happiness that may change to a depressed mood
  • Chest palpitations
  • Feelings of internal restlessness or jitteriness
  • Signs of allergic reactions such as itching, unexplained rash, unexplained swelling and difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Signs of serotonin syndrome such as confusion, rapid heart rate, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, BP changes, overactive reflexes, fever, seizure and coma

    Report to your doctor if any of these side effects continue:

  • Decreased appetite or weight loss
  • Dizziness
  • Dryness  of mouth
  • Diarrhea or loose stools
  • Headache
  • Increased sweating
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Trouble in sleeping

  • Less Common Zoloft side effects





    Report to your doctor if any of these side effects continue:

     

  • Anxiety
  • Changes in vision including blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Flushing or redness of skin
  • Increased appetite
  • Vomiting

  • Withdrawal Side Effects of Zoloft



    Notify your doctor if any of these side effects occur:

  • Agitation
  • Feeling of continuous movement of self or surroundings
  • Increased sweating
  • Trouble in sleeping
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Trouble in walking
  • Unusual tiredness

  • Zoloft Overdose Effects


    It may be more severe than side effects that occur on regular doses and these may occur together. You should notify your doctor immediately if any of the following occurs:

  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness
  • Serotonin Syndrome (diarrhea, fever ,increased sweating, mood or behavior changes, overactive reflexes, racing heartbeat, restlessness, shivering or shaking)
  • Unusually rapid heartbeat
  • Unusually large pupils
  • Vomiting

  • You may have experienced some or none of the side effects of Zoloft listed above. Unfortunately, there is no way for your doctor to know ahead of time if you will be having a problem with a particular medicine that you have never tried before. Therefore, you should make sure to let your health care provider know if you are experiencing any of those side effects of Zoloft. Also, inform your health care provider if you develop something that you think that “just does not seem right”. Even if it may not be due to the medication that you are taking, your health care provider should be able to diagnose and treat that existing problem.
